January 17, 2025

LSUE Winter Weather

EUNICE, La. – Due to expected severe winter weather forecasted for the south Louisiana region, the LSU Eunice campus will be closed on Tuesday, January 21 and Wednesday, January 22.  This closure also affects LSUE’s satellite campuses in Lafayette and Alexandria.

All in-person classes are canceled, while online classes should contact their professors for further instruction.

Students should be advised that because of the closure, all late registration, financial clearance, final date to add/change and 100% refund for dropping a course by 11:59PM deadlines will be delayed from Tuesday, January 21 to Thursday, January 23.

Chartwell’s Food Services are making preparations for food delivery to serve the residents of Bengal Village.  LSUE Housing will provide more information as we get closer to the winter weather conditions.  Campus dining is expected to resume normal operating hours on Thursday, January 23.

Classes and normal business operations are currently scheduled to resume on Thursday, January 23.  LSU Eunice officials will continue to monitor the forecasts and local conditions with any updates being announced through e-mail, social media, and www.lsue.edu.

Winter Weather Safety Tips

As we prepare for the arrival of wintry weather, we want to remind you of the steps we can all take to stay safe and prepared, especially since weather can have significant impacts on daily activities, including travel, classes, and campus operations.

Stay Informed:

  • Monitor official LSUE communications via email, LSUE text alerts, LSUE.edu, and official LSUE social media platforms for updates on campus operations.
  • Check the National Weather Service and local news outlets for the latest forecasts.

Plan Ahead for Travel:

  • Avoid driving if road conditions are icy or hazardous. If you must travel, reduce speed, increase following distance, and brake gently to avoid skidding.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone.
  • Be aware of potential bridge and overpass closures, which tend to freeze before roadways.

Dress Appropriately:

  • Layer clothing to stay warm and dry. Wear a hat, gloves, and waterproof shoes or boots to prevent cold-related illnesses.
  • Protect your face, hands, and ears from prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Campus Safety Measures:

  • Use caution when walking on sidewalks or pathways that may be slippery.

Prepare for Potential Power Outages:

  • Have flashlights and batteries on hand in case of outages. Avoid using candles to prevent fire risks.
  • Charge your electronic devices in advance and ensure you have backup power sources, if possible.

Check on Others:

  • Look out for friends, classmates, and colleagues, especially those who may be new to our region and unfamiliar with winter weather conditions.

By taking these simple precautions, we can all contribute to a safer campus community.
